  2006 Year End
The year ended December 31, 2006 was a very successful one for West Elgin Mutual and the Board of Directors
have declared a refund of $750,000 to eligible property policies.  As a true Mutual insurance company we are able to share the financial success with our policyholders.  In addition to this refund, we have enhanced the coverage for our package home policies by adding Identity Theft Coverage at no additional charge.  See the notes below explaining this important protection.  We have also reduced our pricing on Sump & Sewer coverage.  Ask your agent for details.

Identity Theft Endorsement:
Identity theft is the unauthorized collection and use of your personal information, usually for criminal purposes. This endorsement protects the policyholder against the costs associated with Identity Fraud and the expenses incurred in reclaiming their identity.  Brochures are being sent out with your policy renewal explaining ways to protect your identity.

General:
We cannot stress enough, that your insurance policy is as unique as you are as an individual. In most cases there are coverages that can be added to your policy to give you protection in the event of the myriad of losses that can occur. Please take some time to thoroughly review your policy with your agent.....ask the questions and consider the options now, not after the loss.  Be sure to check out the Insurance Bureau of Canada web site at www.ibc.ca for some consumer information.  Look under Publications>Consumer Brochures.

Farmers:
If you insure livestock, equipment or produce make sure your limit is adequate to cover fluctuations in commodity values.

Loss of use for certain farm equipment has been added to eligible farm policies.  Ask your agent or broker for information.

Automobile:
Is your headrest adjusted properly?  Studies have shown that less than 15% of Canadians have this important safety equipment adjusted in a good position.  The headrest should be at the top of your head no more than 5-10 cm away from the back of your head.  Check out the information on the Insurance Bureau of Canada web site at www.ibc.ca under Publications> Consumer Brochures.

If the usage of your vehicle has changed please contact your agent so that they can offer you the proper coverage.  If you have changed jobs, no longer drive to work or have retired, it is time to talk.  Ask your local professional agent whenever you have a question.

We provide, free of charge to our policyholders, “Deer Whistles” to install on your vehicle.  This can reduce the chance of coming into close contact with nature.  Ask your agent or at any of our offices.

It is your responsibility to ensure that anyone who operates any of your vehicles is the holder of a valid driver’s license.  Don’t assume…….ask.  Don’t lend your vehicle to just anyone, you could still be held responsible for their actions as the owner of the vehicle.

Make sure to notify your agent or broker of newly licensed drivers in your household.  Help them to build an insurance history now for their benefit in the future.

Homeowners:
Please be aware that your policy excludes loss or damage if your dwelling has been vacant for more than 30 consecutive days.  Ask your agent or broker for advice.

Sump & sewer back up coverage is optional on your policy.  Call your agent to see if you qualify and ask about pricing.

Losses due to leakage from home heating apparatus have the potential to be catastrophic.  Your heating fuel supplier has likely already requested verification that your system has been inspected.  If not you can have a certified heating contractor undertake this for your own peace of mind.

Protect your sensitive electronic equipment with a good quality surge protector.  They can be purchased at most electronics retailers or are available from any of our offices at discounted prices for our policyholders.

Smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are also provided to our policyholders at discounted prices.  Do your part to help minimize claims for your company.
